Ravens GM: Justin Madubuike Will Get Franchise Tag if New Contract Isn't Agreed Upon

Tyler ConwayFeb 27, 2024

The Baltimore Ravens aren't allowing Justin Madubuike to hit the open market.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta told reporters the team will use its franchise tag on Madubuike if no long-term deal can be reached by the March 5 tagging deadline.

"We're trying to get a deal done," DeCosta said. "We've had discussions with Justin. He's a guy that has obviously put himself in a fortuitous position this year by the way that he played. Had a great season for us, he's a valued player on the team and we're hopeful we can get a long-term deal done."

Baltimore has several noteworthy impending free agents but only one franchise tag, so the front office will need to work quickly if it hopes to retain the core of the AFC's No. 1 seed. Madubuike, linebacker Patrick Queen and pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney were anchors for an NFL-best defense in 2023 and are all slated to hit the open market.

Madubuike recorded career highs in tackles (56) and sacks (13) while earning his first Pro Bowl appearance and All-Pro selection last season.

The Ravens used their franchise tag on Lamar Jackson last offseason before inking him to a five-year, $260 million contract. If Madubuike is unable to reach terms on a new deal, DeCosta will likely take on a similar strategy and attempt to retain the star defensive lineman after using the tag.

The Ravens currently have around $16.6 million in cap space. Madubuike's franchise tag number would be $22.1 million, so DeCosta will have to move money around in the coming days to retain him and stay under the cap.
