Duke's Kyle Filipowski TBD vs. Louisville After Suffering Injury in Court-Storming

Scott PolacekFeb 26, 2024

It remains to be seen whether Duke big man Kyle Filipowski will play Wednesday's game against Louisville after suffering an injury when Wake Forest fans stormed the court after Saturday's victory over the Blue Devils.

ESPN noted Duke head coach Jon Scheyer said Filipowski was "a little bit sore" but avoided a major injury from the incident even though he was seen with a bag of ice on his right knee.

His status for the upcoming game wasn't clear at the time the coach spoke to reporters.

Scheyer also explained he misspoke when he initially said on Saturday that it was an ankle injury.

It was yet another high-profile court-storming incident during this college basketball season, as a fan made contact with Iowa's Caitlin Clark after the Hawkeyes' women's team lost to Ohio State in January.

There has been plenty of discussion about how to handle the court storming in the aftermath, and Scheyer called for the ACC to take things into its own hands.

"Here's the thing, bottom line, however people feel: That can't happen," the Duke coach said, per Brendan Marks of The Athletic. "The ACC needs to do something. There has to be something done to protect our guys—and not just our guys. Any team that's in that situation."

The postgame chaos overshadowed an impressive win for the Demon Deacons. Hunter Sallis led the way in the 83-79 win with 29 points and six rebounds as one of four starters who scored at least 12 points for the victors.

Filipowski finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists on 6-of-13 shooting from the field.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Blue Devils, who fell to 21-6 overall and 12-4 in ACC play. They haven't dropped back-to-back games since losses to Arkansas and Georgia Tech on Nov. 29 and Dec. 2, but they might not need Filipowski on the floor against Louisville to avoid that fate.

The Cardinals are just 8-19 on the season and have lost three in a row.
