Report: Canelo Álvarez, PBC Mutually Part Ways After Failing to Agree to Charlo Fight

Canelo Álvarez is once again a boxing free agent.

Álvarez and PBC reportedly parted ways Monday just one fight into a three-bout contract, according to Mike Coppinger of ESPN.

The original deal required Álvarez to fight Jermall Charlo on May 4, but Álvarez and PBC could not reach amenable terms on that bout. Álvarez soundly defeated Charlo's brother, Jermell, last September, which lessened the hype for a fight against Jermall.

Jermall Charlo is undefeated at 33-0 but has fought just one time since June 2021. His win over José Benavidez Jr. in November was not the type of strong performance necessary to earn him a hyped fight against Álvarez.

Coppinger reported Edgar Berlanga's management team has been attempting to land a fight with Álvarez in 2024. Berlanga's manager, Keith Connolly, said the fighter could be ready as soon as May 4 despite Berlanga fighting this past weekend.

Jaime Munguia is also considered a potential opponent for this year.

David Benavidez and Terence Crawford are the two names that have drawn the most public support, but Coppinger reported Álvarez "hasn't shown interest" in either of those two prizefights.

Álvarez previously had a contract with DAZN as his exclusive boxing home, and it's possible the two sides explore a reunion.
