ESPN's Zach Lowe detailed the process behind the change. Team governor Steve Ballmer told Lowe it was time for a slightly new identity but said fans were adamant about maintaining the Clippers name.

"The focus groups are advisory, not definitive," he said. "But I still listen to them, and I have heard, partially to my surprise, that there is no interest in a name change. I had thought about [the name] years ago, before I got the team, but we heard similar reactions back then."

The Clippers last changed up their look in 2015. The logo design and uniforms weren't widely panned but were initially mocked a bit since the primary word mark resembled the old NBA Live video game franchise.

More than anything, the Clippers' last rebrand was a little too bland, which was pretty on the nose given how anonymous they were for decades while living in the Los Angeles Lakers' shadow.

The organization has a much more distinctive identity between the cursive font on the jerseys and the ship that's in the middle of its primary logo. Gillian Zucker, the Clippers' president of business operations, is also bullish on the staying power of the secondary "LA" logo.

"It will make for a phenomenal hat," she said. "In 20 years, people will look back and this will be iconic for the Clippers."

The Clippers will play second fiddle to the Lakers in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future. Leaving Staples Center for Intuit Dome represented an important step toward bridging the gap on their more decorated neighbors, though.

A rebrand emphasizes how Clippers basketball is approaching a bold new era.
