MMQB: Marvin Harrison Jr. Won't Test at 2024 NFL Draft Combine and Hasn't Hired Agent
Marvin Harrison Jr. is letting his game tape do the talking.
The Ohio State wide receiver is not attending the scouting combine this week in Indianapolis and may not even work out at the Buckeyes' pro day ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
Harrison, the son of Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison, has also not hired an agent.
Top prospects choosing not to work out at the combine is nothing new. However, it's rare for budding stars to avoid the trip to the combine entirely, as many use the event as a chance to have initial conversations with interested teams.
Harrison is the rare prospect with absolutely nothing to prove. He's the consensus top wide receiver in this draft class and is the top overall prospect on the B/R Scouting Department's big board. Some view Harrison as the best wide receiver prospect since Calvin Johnson in 2007.
Harrison recorded 67 catches for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, winning the Fred Biletnikoff Award and earning a second straight consensus All-American selection.
There's little reason for Harrison to attend the combine. Barring an unforeseen injury, he's going to be a top-five pick and the top non-quarterback off the board. Harrison's next home will come into focus once decisions are made at the top of the draft, as teams consider USC's Caleb Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye and LSU's Jayden Daniels as their quarterback of the future.
The NFL is unlikely to love Harrison's decision, as the league has made a concerted effort to incentivize attendance among top prospects. But there's no downside in Harrison skipping out and little upside in him attending.
With a Hall of Fame father also in his ear, it's also hard to argue against his decision to not hire an agent. Rookie NFL contracts offer little negotiation power, anyway, so Harrison will get to keep that extra percentage that would have gone to an agent for himself.
