Schultz: USC's Caleb Williams Not Expected to Throw at Combine amid NFL Draft Rumors
USC quarterback Caleb Williams is not expected to throw at this week's NFL Scouting Combine, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Sunday.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Williams will still be in Indianapolis at the combine but won't throw for teams. He will instead throw for scouts at USC's pro day in March.
Williams is the No. 4 overall player on Bleacher Report's 2024 NFL Draft Big Board, just behind North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye at No. 3. He is also expected to be taken with the first pick in the NFL draft.
The Chicago Bears hold the No. 1 pick and reportedly "gathered information" about Williams this week along with Maye, J.J. McCarthy and Jayden Daniels.
It's still possible Chicago could trade the pick to a team looking to draft Williams or another top prospect. One of those teams could be the Washington Commanders, who are reportedly "fascinated" by the idea of trading up to draft Williams. If the Commanders keep their pick, there would still be some great options available at No. 2.
There have also been questions about whether the Bears will take Williams with the top pick or stick with quarterback Justin Fields and add talent around him in the draft instead.
Some NFL insiders reportedly believe Chicago should stick with Williams at No. 1, and he has certainly proved worthy through three collegiate seasons. The 22-year-old notched 3,633 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and five interceptions last season. In his Heisman Trophy year in 2022, he picked up 4,537 passing yards, 42 touchdowns and five interceptions.
No matter how things play out, Williams will be one of the first players off the board in April.
