NFL QB: Top-Tier Backups Not Keen on Jets Because Aaron Rodgers Blocks Path to Play
If the New York Jets hope to find a high-end quarterback to be their backup going into next season, Aaron Rodgers' presence on the roster might prove to be a stumbling block.
Per ESPN's Rich Cimini, one veteran quarterback said the Jets could have difficulty convincing one of the top backup options to sign with them knowing their only path to playing time will come if Rodgers suffers an injury.
It's a bit strange to think that quarterbacks might be concerned about potential playing time for the Jets because they have a 40-year-old who is coming off a ruptured Achilles entrenched as their starter.

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮
New York's offensive line was an issue last season. It figures to be a point of emphasis for the front office during the offseason, but there aren't necessarily a lot of great options available in free agency.
Tyron Smith, who has missed at least three games in every season since 2016, is the best tackle who will be available. Other tackle options include Trent Brown and Mike Onwenu. Interior players set to hit the market include Robert Hunt and Kevin Dotson.
The 2024 draft is rich with offensive-tackle prospects, so the Jets could address their need early and often with rookies.
Another potential issue is Rodgers reportedly had an outsized influence on everything the Jets did last season that perhaps they will give him a say in which potential backups they bring in for the 2024 campaign.
Several high-end backups will be available this offseason. Ryan Tannehill, Jacoby Brissett, Tyrod Taylor and Gardner Minshew II are set to become free agents. Jimmy Garoppolo, Taylor Heinicke and Andy Dalton are among those who could be released by their current teams.
The Jets waited too long last season before replacing Zach Wilson after Rodgers' injury in Week 1. He started nine consecutive games and 11 of 13 games from Weeks 2 through 15. They went 4-7 in his 11 starts and were eliminated from playoff contention after a Week 15 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
They can't afford to do the same thing in 2024 if something happens that keeps the four-time NFL MVP from playing for an extended period of time.
