NBA Rumors: Why The League is Terrified of Gilbert Arenas

Eric BallJan 4, 2012

Either Gilbert Arenas has the worst agent of all time or the NBA doesn’t want to touch the former star with a 10-foot pole.

Agent Zero is still a free agent almost two weeks into the season, with not even a sniff at a 10-day contract, which is the definition of a no-strings-attached relationship.

Is this another one of the conspiracy theories to blame on David Stern?

It was less than a year ago when he was averaging 17.3 points in his final 21 games with the Washington Wizards before getting traded to the Orlando Magic for Rashard Lewis among others.

You're telling me a guy who was on pace to be in the top 20 in scoring (after coming back from two knee surgeries) can’t find a job one year later?

Arenas’ stats did in fact dip significantly (eight points, 3.2 assists), but that was largely due to his struggles to fit into an Orlando team that was already complete for the most part. Magic coach Stan Van Gundy even told the media that you can’t blame Arenas for his play a season ago:

"

I don’t think it’s fair to judge Gilbert’s time here. If anything, if people are unhappy with the way Gilbert performed here, you got to lay that on me and the role I gave him. I don’t think you can lay that on Gilbert. I don’t think Gilbert really had much of a chance to play well consistently, with what happened.

"

So why did the Magic get rid of him? It had nothing to do with his skills, according to Van Gundy:

"

It just became a money issue, like everyone knows. That’s what it came down to. That had nothing to do with us being dissatisfied with Gilbert or anyone else. That was just simply a business decision.

"

So when the Magic play the Wizards on Wednesday night, it will be the first time they have played each other without Arenas on either team for the first time in eight years.

I know that bringing a gun into the locker room was beyond idiotic, but anybody who has come in contact with Arenas knows he is the ultimate goofball and wouldn’t hurt a fly. It was a bad joke; he learned from his mistake and has moved on.

So when a team like the San Antonio Spurs desperately need a player like Arenas in wake of Manu Ginobili’s broken hand, why can’t they at least try out Agent Zero for 10 days?

Something is fishy here, and it makes no sense to me.
