Chiefs Rumors: OL Nick Allegretti Played Through Torn UCL Injury in NFL Super Bowl 58

Erin WalshFeb 13, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Nick Allegretti wasn't going to let anything keep him from playing in Super Bowl 58.

Allegretti, who started Sunday's championship in place of an injured Joe Thuney, played the entire game—all 79 offensive snaps—despite suffering a torn UCL in the second quarter, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes seemingly confirmed the news while praising his teammate in a post on X:

Thuney, who earned a First Team All-Pro selection in 2023, was ruled out for the Super Bowl due to an injured pectoral muscle.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury during Kansas City's divisional round win over the Buffalo Bills and also missed the AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens, which Allegretti started and played all 81 offensive snaps.

The Chiefs selected Allegretti in the seventh round of the 2019 draft out of Illinois. He has started just 13 of 74 regular-season games in Kansas City, though he's now a three-time Super Bowl champion.

Allegretti's three Super Bowl titles are also a record for a former Illinois player.

Allegretti is set to become a free agent this offseason, and his UCL tear could be a blow to his hopes of landing a more lucrative contract ahead of the 2024 campaign.

Kansas City enters the 2024 season with Thuney and Trey Smith under contract at the guard positions. It would make sense for the Chiefs to retain his services, though he could be a popular free agent this offseason for teams in need of some help on the offensive line.
