Jon Feliciano Apologizes to 49ers Teammate Spencer Burford for 'Hungover' Post

While most of the attention after the Kansas City Chiefs' 25-22 overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58 was about the amount of alcohol that might be consumed by members of the Kelce family, it also had an impact on the losing team.

49ers guard Jon Feliciano apologized to fellow offensive lineman Spencer Burford for a "hungover" post on X that was critical of him for missing a block on Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones on 3rd-and-4 in overtime that forced a bad throw from Brock Purdy.

On the play in question, the Chiefs brought pressure with a blitz. Burford, who was in the game after Feliciano suffered an injury in the third quarter, decided to assist center Jake Brendel on the pressure coming up the middle from linebacker Nick Bolton.

The Chiefs also had Justin Reid coming on the blitz from the right side next to Jones. Burford eventually recovered to stop Reid, but Jones was in the backfield and forced Purdy to get rid of the ball. His pass sailed out of bounds to force a fourth down.

Burford admitted his mistake on X in response to someone who was critical of the blocking assignment on the play, writing he "should've fanned out and let the backer be the free hitter."

Feliciano pointed out that right tackle Colton McKivitz wasn't responsible for Jones on that assignment. He also took a swipe at Burford without directly naming him:

It's an especially frustrating moment for the 49ers because everything else about the play worked as it was supposed to.

Jauan Jennings, who was the target on the throw, broke free from coverage and would have at least gotten a first down if Purdy had time to make an accurate pass. Brandon Aiyuk, who was on the opposite side of the field, cooked L'Jarius Sneed on his route and was wide open in the end zone.

Instead, the 49ers find themselves in an all-too-familiar position going into an offseason asking a lot of questions about what might have been if they did one or two things differently.

Feliciano is set to become a free agent after signing a one-year deal with the 49ers last offseason. He appeared in 16 games during the regular season and started each of their three playoff games.
