Brock Purdy: 'I Failed' to Put 49ers in Position to Score TDs in Super Bowl 58 Loss

Andrew PetersFeb 12, 2024

Following the San Francisco 49ers overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Sunday, quarterback Brock Purdy lamented the opportunities his team missed out on in the game.

"When you have a good offense like the Chiefs do and what Mahomes can do, for us, it's like, we have to score a touchdown," Purdy said. "We had opportunities to do so I think. We shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and operations and stuff, so, I got to be better in terms of leading the guys and just how I handle things in the huddle. Telling them what to expect, stuff like that. We have the team and the offense to score touchdowns and I think I failed to put our team in position to do that."

Purdy put together a solid game in his first Super Bowl appearance, picking up 255 passing yards and a touchdown, but ultimately the 49ers couldn't find the end zone in overtime and had to settle for a field goal.

On the 49ers opening drive in overtime, Purdy led them down the field and managed to get into the red zone, but after being stopped on third down San Francisco opted to go for the field goal. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs made the 49ers pay, winning the game on a touchdown on the next drive.

"Obviously their offense is really good, Mahomes is really good," Purdy said. "You just don't want to give an opportunity to go down and win the game off a touchdown. When I wasn't able to connect with him, it just hurt."

Purdy has certainly had a great start to his NFL career after being drafted 262nd overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, and he'll likely be back in the position he was on Sunday again. Taking accountability for the loss speaks highly of his character, and the 49ers have a great leader on their team moving forward.

If he's ever in an overtime scenario like Sunday's again, Purdy will be looking to make up for the Super Bowl loss by leading his team to a win.
