Super Bowl 2024: Quarter-by-Quarter Score and Final Stats for Chiefs vs. 49ers

Erik BeastonFeb 12, 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs ran it back Sunday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, becoming the first team since the 2003-04 New England Patriots to win back-to-back Super Bowls following a thrilling overtime battle with the San Francisco 49ers.

Patrick Mahomes won the game's Most Valuable Player award for the third time in his career, and the team established itself as a dynasty with its victory.

How did the Chiefs get there, what did the quarter-by-quarter scoring look like and what did the game look like statistically for the most prominent players?

Find out with this recap of an unforgettable Super Bowl LVIII.

Neither team scored in the first quarter Sunday.

That is not what one would expect given the wealth of offensive stars on the field, but it was the defenses of the Chiefs and 49ers that established dominance early and often.

A Christian McCaffrey fumble on San Francisco's opening drive put an end to a run of 48 yards on five plays. The Chiefs then went three-and-out in consecutive drives, as Niners defensive coordinator Steve Wilks set the tone by rushing four linemen and allowing his back seven to drop into coverage, preventing Mahomes from finding his receivers in time.

Chris Conley caught a ball from 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy for 18 yards, and kick returner Ray-Ray McCloud III hauled one in for 19 to help spark the team's offense entering a second quarter that would be far more productive on the scoreboard for the NFC champions.

49ers rookie kicker Jake Moody set the Super Bowl record for distance on a field goal and earned the first points of the game with a 55-yarder straight through the uprights.

As the Chiefs offense continued to struggle against a Niners defense that was all over the field, attacking the ball-carriers and pressuring Mahomes, San Francisco took a 10-point lead on some trademark Kyle Shanahan trickery.

Purdy snapped the ball and threw to Jauan Jennings. The receiver launched it back across the field for McCaffrey to race 21 yards for the first touchdown of the game.

The play was risky, with Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton on his way to intercept the Jennings throw before lineman Spencer Burford narrowly blocked him, but it worked out well for the Niners.

The Chiefs suffered a momentum-killing turnover when running back Isiah Pachecho coughed up the ball deep in the opposition territory.

The NFC team was dominant for the first 14 minutes, but a late 65-yard drive by the Chiefs culminated with a Harrison Butker 28-yard field goal to ensure Kansas City was not shut out at the half.

Score: 49ers lead 10-3

Things got hairy quickly for the Chiefs in the second half as a rushed Mahomes threw an ill-fated pass in the direction of Marquez Valdes-Scantling that was picked off by Ji'Ayir Brown.

Neither team scored in either of their next two possessions before the Chiefs put together a solid drive for Butker to eclipse Moody's earlier Super Bowl-record field goal with a 57-yarder.

The most significant play of the game came moments later when Tommy Townsend punted 40 yards downfield for Kansas City and the ball ricocheted off the heel of Darrell Luter Jr.

Cornerback Jaylen Watson recovered for the AFC champs, and Mahomes put an exclamation mark on the proceedings with a 28-yard pass to Valdes-Scantling for the Chiefs' first touchdown of the game.

The 49ers' offense stalled in the third quarter, with the team seemingly incapable of manufacturing a sustained drive and failing to take advantage of Brown's interception of Mahomes.

It felt as though the tide had turned, with Kansas City taking a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.

However, a solid drive from the opposition set them up at midfield to start the final quarter of regulation.

Score: Chiefs lead 13-10

Looking to prove they were not flustered by the Chiefs taking the lead, Purdy and the 49ers drove 75 yards in 6:06 and scored the go-ahead touchdown with a 10-yard pass to Jennings.

However, a crucial extra-point miss by Moody meant the Niners led by just three (16-13) rather than four. It was a moment that would prove hugely significant.

The Chiefs answered immediately, capping a 69-yard drive off with another Butker field goal, this one from 24 yards out as the placekickers began to look like legitimate candidates for the MVP award.

Moody would make up for his PAT flub with a 53-yard kick that, against any other team and quarterback, probably would have been the game-winner.

Instead, with just 1:50 left, Mahomes drove the 64 yards and hit tight end Travis Kelce for 22 yards to set up Butker for a chip-shot 29-yard kick that sent the Super Bowl into overtime for only the second time in history.

The first time came when Shanahan was offensive coordinator for an Atlanta Falcons team that squandered a 25-point lead and got Brady'd from there.

Score: Tied at 19-19

The 49ers benefited from a holding call on All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie that extended the opening drive of overtime.

Purdy went to work from there and led his team down the field, including an alert play that saw him step to his right amid the pass rush and hit an open McCaffrey, who took the ball 24 yards downfield.

The heads-up play from the second-year quarterback, coupled with a 13-yard pass to fullback Kyle Juszczyk and a six-yard scamper from McCaffrey, set up the Niners in the red zone.

The team's inability to find the end zone and Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's brilliant calls in big-time situations forced them to settle for a 27-yard field goal that allowed them to take the three-point lead in overtime.

Mahomes and the Chiefs offense took the field and quickly found themselves in a tricky situation, with a fourth-and-one at their own 34. With the weight of the world on their shoulders, head coach Andy Reid dialed up a quarterback keeper that saw Kelce blocking on an eight-yard scamper by the two-time NFL MVP.

From there, Mahomes poked at the San Francisco defense. He hit Valdes-Scantling for three yards and then seven. He hit rookie Rashee Rice for 14 yards, then Pachecho for four and five, respectively, before rushing up the middle for 19 yards himself.

It was a masterful performance by a quarterback who appeared to have taken it upon himself to will a victory for his team.

Pachecho delivered another three-yard run and Mahomes hit Kelce for seven, setting the team up for a first-and-goal from the San Francisco three-yard line. From there, it was history.

Receiver Mecole Hardman motioned left, causing cornerback Jimmy Ward to shift his attention away and onto Kelce. Mahomes hiked the ball, Hardman slipped out right, caught the pass and won Super Bowl LVIII.

Mahomes took the game's MVP award and finished with 333 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and he led the team with 66 rushing yards.

Meanwhile, Purdy completed 23 of 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown.

Kelce had a monster second half, hauling in eight catches for 92 yards, while McCaffrey finished the game as the 49ers' leading rusher and receiver with 160 all-purpose yards.

As had been the case in Baltimore in the AFC Championship Game, Kansas City's stars showed up when they had to, making the biggest plays of the game with a Lombardi Trophy at stake.

Now, the Chiefs will turn their attention to a never-before-seen three-peat that will further enhance what is already a dynastic legacy.

Final score: Kansas City wins 25-22
