Jauan Jennings-Christian McCaffrey Trick Play TD Hypes 49ers, NFL Fans in Super Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers scored the first touchdown in Super Bowl LVIII and utilized some trickery to get to the end zone.

Quarterback Brock Purdy sent a backward pass to Jauan Jennings who dropped back and fired a forward pass across the field to running back Christian McCaffrey, who exploded after the catch and took it home for a 21-yard score.

It was McCaffrey's ninth career postseason touchdown and the fifth of this season's run. The score put the 49ers up 10-0 with 4:23 remaining in the second quarter.

Fans on social media celebrated the play and praised 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's tendency to resort to trick plays like this one.

Jennings pass was a flashback for the wide receiver as he had previously been a quarterback during his high school days. He converted to wide receiver in college, but notably did complete a 58-yard touchdown pass to current Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs in 2015.

He was actually rated higher than both Purdy and Patrick Mahomes as a quarterback recruit coming out of high school and fans pointed this out on social media as well.

San Francisco would take a 10-3 lead going into halftime, with the connection from Jennings to McCaffrey serving as the only touchdown scored by either team in the opening half.
