Chiefs' Kadarius Toney Out vs. 49ers for NFL Super Bowl 58 amid Injury Drama

Adam WellsFeb 11, 2024

Amid the ongoing confusion about his health, Kadarius Toney will not be on the field for the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58 on Sunday night.

Toney was among the Chiefs' inactives for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers even though he wasn't on the Chiefs' official injury report this week.

ESPN's Adam Schefter previously reported Toney was not expected to play,

Toney hasn't appeared in a game since Kansas City's 27-17 win over the New England Patriots in Week 15. He missed the final three games of the regular season and the first two playoff games so far with what the team designated as hip and ankle injuries.

The Chiefs announced Toney was inactive for the AFC Championship Game due to hip and personal reasons. The personal reason was likely related to Toney's girlfriend, Charnesia Lumpkin, giving birth to the couple's first child on Jan. 27.

In an Instagram Live video recorded on the same day as the AFC Championship Game, Toney said he wasn't hurt and asked someone to "go tell 'em what's really going on."

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation with Toney during a Zoom call with the media on Jan. 30.

"Well, obviously he's been on the injury report. That part is not made up by any means," Reid said. "He's been working through some things and he'll be back out there."

During Super Bowl Opening Night on Monday, Toney said on NFL Network (h/t ESPN.com) his Instagram Live comments were "chopped up" and his comments were directed at fans of his former team, the New York Giants:

"I never attacked the Chiefs, never said anything about the Chiefs. Who I was referring to was the Giants fans and the people in my comments, my comment box, not even on my live recording, so you wouldn't even know they were there. But I was referring to them, which I shouldn't have. I just wanted to go out there. I just wanted to get my message across as far as my injury, but I shouldn't have did that at the end of the day. I'm a man and I can accept my mistakes just like I accept my wins. I'm just moving past that right now. We're trying to go out and trying to win [the Super Bowl]."

A first-round draft pick by the Giants in 2021, Toney quickly fell out of favor in New York. He was traded to the Chiefs for two draft picks in October 2022.

Toney hasn't made much of an impression overall in Kansas City, but he played a huge role in the team's victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57. He caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes early in the third quarter to give the Chiefs a 28-27 lead.

His 65-yard punt return in the fourth quarter is the longest in Super Bowl History. It set up Skyy Moore's touchdown catch that gave the Chiefs an eight point lead.

Kansas City would go on to beat the Eagles 38-35 on Harrison Butker's 27-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining. It was the franchise's second Super Bowl victory in four seasons.

Toney caught 27 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown in 13 games this season.
