Video: The Rock Trolls Cody Rhodes Fans amid Backlash to WWE WrestleMania Rumors
Ahead of Thursday night's potentially groundbreaking WrestleMania 40 press conference in Las Vegas, WWE legend The Rock took aim at a portion of Cody Rhodes' fanbase.
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, The Rock said that while he loves Rhodes and his passionate fanbase, there are some supporters of Rhodes who he dubbed "Cody crybabies."
In reference to the fans he called "Cody crybabies," The Rock said: "All you gotta do is sit back, know your role, shut your mouth and the enjoy the ride. The Rock is gonna take your candy asses on. So hashtag that. Hashtag 'Shut your b---h asses up,' Hashtag 'Cody crybabies.'"
Rhodes lost to undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39 last year due to interference from Solo Sikoa, and ever since then, Cody has made it his stated goal to get another shot at Reigns and win the title.
Last month, Rhodes won his second consecutive men's Royal Rumble match and pointed at The Tribal Chief afterward, seemingly setting the stage for a rematch in the main event of WrestleMania 40.
However, on last week's episode of SmackDown, Rhodes threw everyone a curveball by saying he would not face Reigns at WrestleMania despite his plans to eventually beat Reigns and take the championship his Hall of Fame father, Dusty Rhodes, fell just short of winning.
Rhodes said several legends counseled him on his decision, including The Rock, who made his WWE return and stared down Reigns to close the show.
That led most to assume that it would lead to a clash between real-life cousins in Reigns and The Rock, relegating Rhodes to a match against world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins.
However, Rhodes did not officially announce his WrestleMania decision on last week's SmackDown or this week's Raw, and Reigns vs. The Rock has not yet been made official either.
A vocal portion of the WWE fanbase has thrown its support behind Rhodes, rejecting the idea of Reigns vs. The Rock and getting #WeWantCody trending on X for three days in a row.
The Rock's comments to McAfee suggest he is clearly aware of the response, but he is also undaunted, as he touted the enormity of a match against Reigns (h/t Wrestle Ops):
"At the end of the day, I know it, you know it, we know it, Roman knows it, Cody knows it, his fans know it, that at the end of the day, The Rock vs Roman Reigns is the, capital T, capital H, capital E, biggest main event in the history of WrestleMania. The Rock and Roman Reigns and I'll end it there, they all know it."
The Rock also confirmed during the interview (h/t Bill Pritchard of Wrestle Zone) that he has started the training camp for his in-ring return and has multiple rings set up in Hawai'i, which suggests he will indeed compete at WrestleMania 40 in April.
Rhodes posted Thursday on his Instagram stories that he has made his decision, which means questions are likely to be answered at Thursday's press conference.
All signs are pointing toward The Rock vs. Reigns in some capacity, but it remains to be seen if Rhodes will insert himself into the situation as well by either making it a Triple Threat or having Reigns face both Rhodes and The Rock in separate singles matches on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
