Chiefs GM Veach on Andy Reid Retirement Rumors: 'I Don't Buy One Bit of That'

Scott PolacekFeb 7, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach believes Andy Reid will be his organization's head coach in 2024 regardless of what happens in Sunday's Super Bowl.

"That is not something that I've heard directly," Veach said of rumors Reid may retire, per Audacy's 610 Sports Radio (15:25 mark). "I don't buy one bit of that, for what it's worth. Maybe I don't know anything, but I would be shocked more than anybody—and I talk to coach every day."

It has been a month of notable veteran coaches either retiring or parting ways with their teams with Bill Belichick no longer with the New England Patriots, Pete Carroll no longer on the sidelines for the Seattle Seahawks and Nick Saban retiring from Alabama in the college game.

Yet it seems like Reid will be right there in 2024 as one of the faces of the profession.

"Am I retiring? Listen, my mom and dad told me this when they were working. They said you'll know when it's time," Reid told reporters Monday. "And I'm ready to go right now. Let's go.

"That's what they would tell me when I was young. I was an inquisitive kid, and so that's the way I look. Somewhere, you're going to know when it's time. Today's not the day."

Reid started his head coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles for 14 seasons from 1999 through 2012. He went to the playoffs nine times and one Super Bowl with a 130-93-1 record but was never able to lift the Lombardi Trophy.

That changed in Kansas City.

This season is his 11th with the Chiefs, and a win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday would mean his third Super Bowl title. It will also be the fourth Super Bowl the Chiefs have played in during the last five years.

They are the league's modern dynasty with one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history under center in Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes is just 28 years old and figures to remain dominant for seasons to come.

Reid doesn't want to walk away from what could be a number of additional Super Bowl runs.
