Giants Rumors: Shane Bowen Hired as DC After Titans Tenure; Replaces Wink Martindale

The New York Giants have hired former Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen for the same role, per The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

Bowen spent six seasons with the Titans, serving as the outside linebackers coach in 2018 and taking over defensive coordinator responsibilities in 2021. The Titans fired head coach Mike Vrabel following the conclusion of the season.

The Giants mutually agreed to part ways with former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale following a heated disagreement between him and head coach Brian Daboll. A little less than a month later, the Giants have their new defensive leader.

Before joining the Titans staff, Bowen spent two seasons as a defensive assistant for the Houston Texans, where he got his start as an NFL coach. Before that, he served in a variety of roles in the college ranks.

Under Bowen in 2023, the Titans allowed 335.5 yards per game, which tied Green Bay for 17th in the NFL. Tennessee allowed 21.6 points per game, which was good for 16th in the league. This season, Martindale's defense ranked 26th in points allowed with 23.9 per game and 27th in total defense as the Giants finished the year 6-11.

Before hiring Bowen, the Giants had a handful of potential candidates take jobs elsewhere. Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson was hired as defensive coordinator of the Titans and Buffalo Bills linebackers coach Bobby Babich was given defensive coordinator responsibilities for his current team. The Giants also reportedly interviewed Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach Daronte Jones last week in Mobile, Alabama, during the senior bowl.

Now, the Giants' search is over and they will get to work with Bowen at the helm.
