Report: Lillard, Brunson, Haliburton, Markkanen, Beasley in 2024 NBA 3-Point Contest

Timothy RappFeb 5, 2024

The three-point contest for NBA All-Star Weekend is starting to take shape.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Tyrese Haliburton, Damian Lillard, Jalen Brunson, Lauri Markkanen and Malik Beasley are "among the commitments for the three-point contest," with the possibility of more entrants to come.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski also reported that Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell will also participate in the three-point contest.

Lillard is going to be the favorite to win the contest after taking the crown last season.

The man with limitless range is shooting just 34.7 percent from three in his first season with the Milwaukee Bucks, below his career average of 37.1 percent from deep. But few players rise to the moment quite like Dame, making him the current frontrunner.

One of the players he knocked off last season was the 23-year-old Haliburton, who is shooting a cool 39.8 percent from three this season and 40.5 percent for his career.

The one concern about Haliburton is that he doesn't have the fluid shooting motion of some of the other participants, and rhythm is everything in the three-point contest. Given the season he's having, however, bet against him at your own peril.

Brunson, 27, continues to impress since joining the New York Knicks, shooting 41.3 percent from three on the season. He's become one of the top point guards in the NBA and should be a major threat to unseat Lillard.

Markkanen, 26, is on the fast track to becoming one of the top stretch-4s in the NBA. This season he's shooting 40.1 percent from three and will be looking to rise above the glut of guards in this year's competition.

Finally, the 27-year-old Beasley doesn't offer the same level of star power as the rest of the current field but certainly should be a factor, shooting a career-best 45.1 percent from beyond the arc in the 2023-24 season.
