Auston Matthews Wins 2024 NHL All-Star Game MVP as Team Matthews Beats Team McDavid

Team Matthews, captained by Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews, defeated Team McDavid, captained by Edmonton Oilers standout Connor McDavid, 7-4 on Saturday to win the 2024 NHL All-Star Game.

Matthews, who notched one goal and two assists between the semifinals and finals, was named the All-Star Game MVP in front of his hometown fans at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena.

He is the first Maple Leafs player to win the All-Star Game MVP award since Vincent Damphousse in 1991.

Team Matthews opened up Saturday's action with a 6-5 shootout win over Team Hughes, captained by Vancouver Canucks star Quinn Hughes and his brother, New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes, to clinch a berth in the All-Star Game final.

Matthews notched the secondary assist on Mitch Marner's goal in that matchup.

In the final, Matthews recorded the primary assist on Clayton Keller's opening goal and went on to score a goal of his own to give his team a 5-3 lead.

After the game, fans were quick to question why Matthews was named the MVP after players like Nashville Predators star Filip Forsberg and Detroit Red Wings star Alex DeBrincat had better performances.

Through both games, Forsberg finished with five points and Alex DeBrincat finished with six points.

Now that the All-Star Game is complete, players will return to their respective clubs in hopes of competing for the Stanley Cup later this year. Matthews and the Maple Leafs are in a good position to contend as they sit fourth in the Atlantic Division with a 25-14-8 record.

There will be no All-Star Game next year as the 4 Nations Face-Off between the United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland will take place in February 2025.
