NFL Rumors: Ravens' Mike Macdonald Slated for 2nd Seahawks HC Interview

Adam WellsJan 31, 2024

The Seattle Seahawks may be zeroing in on Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as their next head coach.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Macdonald is going to have a second interview with the Seahawks on Wednesday.

Macdonald had his first interview with Seattle on Tuesday. Pelissero noted Wednesday's meeting will be going through the "expanded process" the Seahawks have done with other candidates.

The Seahawks and Washington Commanders are the only two teams that have yet to fill their head-coaching vacancies.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that Macdonald and Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson were among the top candidates for both teams.

Schefter noted some people cited Johnson as the "presumptive favorite" in Washington.

Johnson came off the board on Tuesday when he withdrew from consideration for both jobs to remain in his current position with the Lions.

Per Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post, Johnson told the Seahawks and Commanders he wanted the opportunity to win a Super Bowl with Detroit.

That leaves Macdonald as arguably the highest-profile candidate still available. Bill Belichick is also technically on the board, but the Atlanta Falcons were the only team known to have interviewed him before they hired Raheem Morris.

Other candidates the Seahawks are scheduled to interview for a second time include Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

Macdonald just completed his second season as Baltimore's defensive coordinator. The 36-year-old played an integral role in the Ravens turning in a historic performance on defense in 2023.

The Ravens became the first team in NFL history to lead the league in points allowed per game, sacks and takeaways. They closed the season by holding each of their last six opponents under 20 points, including their 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.

Seattle is seeking a new head coach for the first time since the end of the 2009 season. Pete Carroll was moved into an advisor role in the front office after the Seahawks missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record this season.
