Asante Samuel 'Happy' for His Son That Belichick Isn't Chargers HC over Jim Harbaugh

Scott PolacekJan 30, 2024

Asante Samuel is thrilled the Los Angeles Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh for one primary reason.

He isn't Bill Belichick.

The former NFL defensive back discussed the Chargers' decision with former NFL defensive end Elton Patterson on their YouTube show Say What Needs To Be Said. Samuel's perspective is particularly notable because his son, Asante Samuel Jr., is a cornerback for the Chargers.

"I had to play it off for a long time ... but the time is over now," Samuel said of the chance Los Angeles would hire Belichick. "I did not want that to happen. Thank you, dear Lord, that did not happen ... There would've been issues. He would've had situations he would've had to overcome. He would've had to start from the ground up."

Samuel played for Belichick and the New England Patriots for the first five seasons of his career and won two Super Bowls. He was also a Pro Bowler and First Team All-Pro selection in his final year with New England.

Yet he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles when he hit free agency and clearly didn't love playing for the legendary coach.

"Some of those things I don't think he would've understood how to deal with," Samuel continued. "You know, moving them around, putting the third string in, and playing these mind games. I don't want my son to have to deal with that, so I'm happy that coach Belichick didn't get to be the head coach [of] the L.A. Chargers."

The younger Samuel won't have to worry about that as he enters his fourth season in the league. Instead, he will be focused on helping the Chargers build a winner in the AFC West under Harbaugh.
