NFL Rumors: Saints Eye Greg Lewis as OC; Ravens Coach Won 2 Super Bowls with Chiefs

Adam WellsJan 30, 2024

Two weeks after announcing Pete Carmichael Jr. wouldn't return in 2024, the New Orleans Saints are adding Baltimore Ravens wide receivers coach Greg Lewis to their list of offensive coordinator candidates.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Lewis will interview with the Saints on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old Lewis spent the 2023 season in Baltimore. He won two Super Bowls in six seasons as a member of Andy Reid's coaching staff with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2017 to '22.

Carmichael was the longest-tenured offensive coordinator in the NFL, having worked in that role for the Saints since the 2009 season. He originally joined organization in 2006 when Sean Payton was first hired as head coach.

After missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year, head coach Dennis Allen cleaned out most of the offensive staff. Carmichael, offensive assistant Bob Bicknell and wide receivers coach Kodi Burns were all fired.

Running backs coach Joel Thomas left the Saints to take the same position with the New York Jets.

The Saints ranked ninth in points per game this season, their highest mark in that category since 2020 (fifth).

Carmichael started as a quarterbacks coach for the Saints in 2006. He added the title of passing game coach the following year and retained those titles for two seasons before getting promoted to offensive coordinator in 2009.

New Orleans has already had one interview with Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson about replacing Carmichael. Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan are also scheduled to interview with the Saints.

Lewis had an eight-year playing career from 2003 to '10 after being an undrafted free agent out of Illinois. He moved into coaching in 2012 at the college ranks.

The Saints gave Lewis his first opportunity as an NFL coach in 2015 when he was hired as an offensive assistant. He spent one year in that role before becoming the wide receivers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Andy Reid, who coached Lewis in Philadelphia when he was a player, hired him as Kansas City's wide receivers coach in January 2017. He was the running backs coach for the Chiefs in 2021 and 2022.
