NFL Rumors: Ron Rivera Interviews for Rams DC Job amid Cowboys Buzz

Doric SamJan 29, 2024

After being fired by the Washington Commanders this offseason, former head coach Ron Rivera is exploring other job opportunities.

Per Jonathan Jones of CBS, Rivera interviewed with the Los Angeles Rams for their vacant defensive coordinator position over the weekend. It was also reported previously that the Dallas Cowboys would be interested in Rivera if defensive coordinator Dan Quinn leaves to take a head coaching job.

Rivera also interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles for their defensive coordinator, so it appears that he will be returning to his roots.

Prior to becoming head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2011, Rivera worked as a defensive assistant on multiple teams and made a name for himself as defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears (2004-06) and the Los Angeles Chargers (2008-10). In his last year as a defensive coordinator in 2010, the Chargers led the league in total defense.

After coaching the Panthers for nine years, Rivera became head coach of the Commanders in 2020. Unfortunately, his run in Washington wasn't very successful as the team's lone playoff appearance in his tenure came in his first year. The Commanders placed last in the NFC East this season with a 4-13 record.

The Rams entered the market for a new defensive coordinator when Raheem Morris departed last week to become head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. The Los Angeles defense was a middling unit this season that allowed 337.9 yards and 22.2 points per game.

It's clear that Rivera is still a highly respected defensive mind, so the Rams would be wise to consider adding him to the coaching staff if they want to improve next season.
