Jim Harbaugh Rumors: Dean Spanos 'Became Emphatic' Chargers Had to Hire Michigan HC

The Los Angeles Chargers had to land Jim Harbaugh. Or at least it felt that way.

As Peter King of Pro Football Talk wrote on Monday, the organization made it the overwhelming priority to land the former Michigan head coach:

"Harbaugh was in the right place at the right time. Chargers owner Dean Spanos was desperate, after hiring three rookie head coaches in the previous 11 years (Mike McCoy, Anthony Lynn, Brandon Staley), to get an experienced winner. He became emphatic that the team had to do everything in its power to secure Harbaugh. 'We're going to re-imagine how we do everything,' Spanos said. That includes hiring a coach who will have ultimate power over football for a team moving into a new facility in El Segundo, Calif., and fighting to earn a share of a winners-only L.A. market."

Few teams have been more disappointing in the past two years than the Chargers. In 2022, the team finally made the playoffs with Justin Herbert, only to blow a 27-point lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars and lose in the Wild Card Round.

And last year, the team stumbled to a 5-12 record, Staley was fired midseason and the team found itself with the No. 5 overall pick in the NFL draft.

Big changes were needed, and Harbaugh—who has succeeded in both the NFL and college as a head coach—will bring them.
