Bills Name Joe Brady OC on Sean McDermott's Staff After Success with Josh Allen

The Buffalo Bills are removing the interim tag from Joe Brady's title, naming him the full-time offensive coordinator on Sunday.

The team fired former offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey in mid-November and moved Brady into the interim role, and the decision paid off immediately—the team went 6-1 to close the regular season, won the AFC East title and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend.

In Brady's nine games between the regular season and playoffs, the Bills averaged 27.1 points per game. In Dorsey's final six games on the job, the Bills didn't hit that mark once.

"Just some of the new energy around our offense, my hope is, and my aim is that it will create a little bit of confidence, clarity and ability to anticipate, as opposed to in some cases react," Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott told reporters after making the switch to Brady. "And I think that's what a part of playing the quarterback position is all about."

Brady is just 34 and is considered one of the bright young offensive minds in the sport.

His brief coaching career has included serving as the linebackers coach at William & Mary (2013-14), a graduate assistant at Penn State (2015-16), an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints (2017-18), the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at LSU (2019), the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (2020-21) and the quarterbacks coach for the Bills (2022-23) before ascending to the role of offensive coordinator.

Superstar quarterback Josh Allen endorsed Brady last week when asked by reporters about the possibility of him becoming the full-time offensive coordinator:

"I would fully embrace it. I love Joe. I love what he brings to this team, to our offense, the juice that he has, the passion that he has for football. How much preparation he's put into a tough situation these last seven to eight weeks. Yeah, I would fully embrace it. And obviously there's stuff that needs to go on before that, and I understand there's probably an interview process and all that, but he's got my vote."

The Bills continue to knock at the door in the AFC but haven't been able to get over the hump, in large part due to the obstacle that is Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

The hope is that giving Brady a full offseason to put together his offensive scheme will not only allow Buffalo to continue its positive momentum on offense from the end of the 2023 campaign, but take that group to new, championship-worthy heights.
