Schefter: Chiefs' Andy Reid Isn't Thinking NFL Retirement amid Bill Belichick Rumors

Scott PolacekJan 28, 2024

Bill Belichick already coached an all-time great quarterback in Tom Brady, but could he coach another in Patrick Mahomes?

Not so fast.

ESPN's Adam Schefter (1:50 mark) discussed the possibility of the Kansas City Chiefs perhaps pursuing Belichick if head coach Andy Reid decided to retire if he won another Super Bowl. However, Schefter noted that Reid is "not thinking about walking away" as the Chiefs prepare for Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens.

It isn't hard to see why the Chiefs would be interested in Belichick in such a hypothetical.

The 71-year-old is surely looking for a team in the middle of a win-now window, and no team in the NFL fits that bill more than Kansas City. Mahomes is the best signal-caller in the league and just led the franchise to its sixth consecutive AFC Championship Game.

Belichick is also familiar with what it takes to work with a legendary quarterback and could pick up right where Reid left off if the latter decided to retire.

There isn't much left for the 65-year-old Reid to accomplish with a resume that includes two Lombardi Trophies and four Super Bowl appearances. He led the Philadelphia Eagles to the playoffs nine times in 14 years and has guided Kansas City to the playoffs 10 times in 11 years at the helm.

Overall, he is 258-144-1 and is widely considered one of the best coaches in the league.

Another Super Bowl title this season would mark his first back-to-back championships and three Lombardi Trophies in five years. Nobody could doubt his legacy at that point, although there may be a desire to continue building on all the success as half of the Mahomes-Reid partnership.

It seems like he isn't giving much thought to retirement at this point, although there could be quite the replacement lined up if he does after Belichick and the New England Patriots parted ways this offseason.
