Giannis: 'Feels Like the Whole World Is Ending' When Bucks Lose amid NBA Title Push

Jack MurrayJan 28, 2024

New Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers has entered a pretty unique situation and his star player believes he is up to the task.

Despite a 30-13 start to the season, Milwaukee opted to fire first-year head coach Adrian Griffin and turned to former NBA Champion Doc Rivers as the next head coach.

With Griffin being cast away with such a short leash, the task ahead of Rivers is full of high expectations and little room for error. Two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo acknowledged this and admitted that it is not the easiest job for a coach and that it shows courage from Rivers to even take the job.

"It speaks volumes," Antetokounmpo said, per Eric Nehm of The Athletic. "You could tell what he's built of. He's tough. It's hard to take this job."

He then continued by saying that while the expectations can be difficult, it's something he has embraced and something he believes Rivers can be an excellent fit for.

"You lose, it feels like the whole world is ending," Antetokounmpo said, per Nehm. "You win by five, why didn't you win by 20? You have Giannis, you have Dame, you have Khris (Middleton). It's hard. Nothing is good enough. Only a championship is good enough. We've got to that point, which is crazy. But I'm embracing it. I'm OK with it. I can sleep well at night. And I think having somebody that, you know, he's not uneasy with that, he's confident. Having somebody like that, I think he makes the environment of the locker room better."

The Bucks are currently in second place in the Eastern Conference at 32-14. Milwaukee is three-games behind the Boston Celtics for the No. 1 seed and look like a true title contender heading into the postseason.

The decision to move on from Griffin was certainly surprising, but this Bucks team is too good to let anything get in the way. Rivers has nearly 1,100 regular season coaching wins and has coached in 215 playoff games. He led the Celtics to two NBA Finals appearances, with one championship in 2008, and could be an experienced voice that can guide this Milwaukee team back to the NBA Finals.
