NFL Rumors: Jared Goff, Lions to Discuss Contract to Be Among 'Higher-Paid' QBs

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff appears set to cash in this offseason.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on NFL GameDay that the Detroit Lions are prepared to discuss contract extensions with Goff in the offseason and this could result in him shooting up the highest-paid player rankings.

"The Detroit Lions never considered him to be a bridge quarterback, always thought he would be the franchise guy," Rapoport said. "My understanding is after they get to the Super Bowl, this offseason, the Lions and Goff's representation are expected to begin talks on a contract extension to make him one of the higher-paid quarterbacks in the NFL."

Goff has one year remaining on his current contract and is set to make $31.6 million in 2024. After this, he would be an unrestricted free agent and likely very sought after in free agency as he would be just entering his age-31 season.

The Lions are looking to avoid this and lock up Goff long-term in order to stabilize the quarterback position and prepare for a sustained playoff window. While Goff still ranks as the 17th highest-paid player in the NFL, a new contract would likely launch him into the upper echelon of the league.

Joe Burrow is currently the highest-paid player, with a cap hit of $55 million. Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts all make more than $50 million while Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson, Kyler Murray and Patrick Mahomes all make more than $45 million.

It's unknown which range Goff will likely fit into but his play in 2023 is making quite the case. He threw for 4,575 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season, leading Detroit to a 12-5 regular season record and the first two multi-win playoff run for the Lions in franchise history.

Before the contract discussions begin, Goff and the Lions will turn focus towards the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship.
