NFL Rumors: Chargers' Kellen Moore Agrees to OC Contract With Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have found their replacement for Brian Johnson.

Former Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has been hired as Philadelphia's new offensive coordinator and will replace Johnson, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Eagles fired both Johnson and defensive coordinator Sean Desai following a 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card round earlier this month. Johnson had been with the Eagles since 2021 but 2023 was his first as offensive coordinator.

Both of the franchise's former coordinators played a role in Philadelphia's inability to rebound from a late season skid that saw the team lose five of its last six regular season games.

While the Eagles' offense ranked seventh in points per game, eighth in yards per game and 16th in passing yards in 2023, the team scored 25-plus points in just two of its last six games.

Additionally, quarterback Jalen Hurts regressed under Johnson after taking a step forward under former OC Shane Steichen in 2022. ESPN's Tim McManus reported earlier this month that Hurts had expressed disappointment because his "desired direction for the offense" had "not materialized" under Johnson.

Moore will now get to work with the third high-profile quarterback of his coaching career in Hurts. He coached Dak Prescott as offensive coordinator of the Cowboys from 2019-2022 and Justin Herbert as offensive coordinator of the Chargers in 2023.

The 35-year-old's best season in Dallas came in 2021 when the Cowboys led the NFL in both points and yards.

During the 2023 campaign as offensive coordinator of the Chargers, the Bolts ranked 21st in scoring, which wasn't all Moore's fault as former head coach Brandon Staley received a lot of the blame.

The Eagles have also already found their replacement for Desai, hiring former Miami Dolphins DC Vic Fangio as their new defensive coordinator. Fangio served as a consultant for the Birds in 2022.
