Report: Sean Desai to Interview with Bills, Falcons for DC Jobs After Eagles Stint

Mike ChiariJan 27, 2024

Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai is interviewing for the Buffalo Bills and Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator jobs Saturday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Desai, 40, started the 2023 season as Philly's DC, but he was demoted in December, and Matt Patricia became the defensive play-caller.

Previously, Desai served as the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator in 2021, and the Seattle Seahawks' associate head coach and defensive assistant in 2022.

During his one season as Chicago's DC, the Bears ranked only 22nd in points allowed, but they were sixth in total defense and third against the pass.

It was a stark contrast this season in Philadelphia, as the Eagles were 26th in total defense, 30th in scoring defense and 31st against the pass.

Teams easily moved the ball on the Eagles through the air, averaging 252.7 passing yards per game. That is a big reason why they lost five of their final six games to finish 11-6, and lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs, although much of the late-season turmoil occurred after Desai was replaced.

The Bills would be an intriguing landing spot for Desai since they went without a defensive coordinator this season after Leslie Frazier stepped away from coaching. Head coach Sean McDermott handled the defensive play-calling and Buffalo ranked ninth in total defense and fourth in scoring defense despite dealing with numerous defensive injuries.

Eric Washington, who was the highest-ranking defensive assistant as defensive line coach and assistant head coach, took the Bears' defensive coordinator job Saturday, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

It is possible McDermott is looking for a new top defensive assistant while retaining play-calling duties, or he could truly be looking for a new play-caller.

The Falcons hired former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris as their new head coach, and he is in the midst of building out his staff.

Morris figures to have a ton of say in what type of defense is run, but he may be looking for someone to collaborate with.

This season, the offensive-minded Arthur Smith was head coach, while Ryan Nielsen was defensive coordinator. He has since been named the Jacksonville Jaguars' DC.

Atlanta's defense played beyond expectations, ranking 11th in scoring defense and 18th in total defense.

That means Desai will have plenty of talent to work with if he ends up landing the Falcons' DC job.
