Vic Fangio, Eagles Reportedly Agree to Contract as DC After Dolphins Exit

Adam WellsJan 25, 2024

In the aftermath of a late-season collapse spurred on by a porous defense that couldn't stop anyone, the Philadelphia Eagles are bringing in one of the most respected minds in the NFL as their new defensive coordinator.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Vic Fangio is expected to sign a deal with the Eagles on Thursday.

Fangio always seemed like the obvious candidate for the Eagles when they announced Sean Desai and Matt Patricia wouldn't be returning to the coaching staff in 2024.

Philadelphia signed Fangio to a short-term deal last season leading up to Super Bowl 57 to help with the team's preparation against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Even though it would have made a natural fit for Fangio to become the full-time defensive coordinator after Jonathan Gannon was named head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, he was instead hired by the Miami Dolphins.

It was announced Wednesday that Fangio and the Dolphins agreed to mutually part ways.

Fangio also has ties to Pennsylvania as a Dunmore native. He has family members who live in Dunmore.

The Eagles will be hoping Fangio can orchestrate a quick turnaround. They allowed the third-most points per game (25.2) and sixth-most yards per game (356.1) during the regular season.

Six of the last seven teams that played the Eagles this season scored at least 25 points, including 32 from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Game.

Fangio is one of two big additions the Eagles will be making to their coaching staff this offseason. They are also looking for a new offensive coordinator with Brian Johnson not coming back.

Head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters Wednesday they need to bring in "new ideas" from outside the building to reach their full potential.

The Eagles went 11-6 during the regular season but lost five of their final six games. They got blown out 32-9 by the Bucs in the playoff game on Jan. 15.
