Australian Open 2024 Results: Instant Reactions to Winners and Losers from Tuesday

A pair of blockbuster semifinal matches were set up at the 2024 Australian Open on Tuesday.

Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka, who are the only top 10 seeds left in the women's singles draw, won their respective matches to set up an incredible semifinal showdown that could decide who wins the first Grand Slam title of 2024.

Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner will meet in a semifinal for the second time in the last three Grand Slams.

Djokovic, the 10-time winner in Melbourne, eliminated Taylor Fritz, the last American man left in the draw.

Sinner cruised past Andrey Rublev in what was expected to be the closer of the two men's quarterfinals played on Tuesday.

Sinner's performance built up the hype for his showdown with Djokovic and that he might be able to take down the man to beat in Melbourne.

Gauff and Sabalenka have been building toward a semifinal showdown.

The possibility turned into a reality early in the tournament because so many seeded players were eliminated in the first three rounds.

Gauff and Sabalenka entered Tuesday as two of the three remaining seeds in the women's draw.

Both players produced victories, but Gauff had the more difficult time inside Rod Laver Arena.

The 2023 U.S. Open champion needed three sets to get past Marta Kostyuk. Gauff did not gain any separation in the first two sets, which were split by a tiebreak win each.

Gauff finally pulled away in the third set to reach her first-ever Australian Open semifinal and second-career Grand Slam semifinal.

Sabalenka is used to playing at this stage of major tournaments. The No. 2 seed advanced to her sixth straight semifinal with a straight-set win over Barbora Krejcikova.

Sabalenka is 2-5 in her career in Grand Slam semifinals, but two of those wins occurred last season on hard courts. She is the reigning Australian Open champion and was the runner-up to Gauff at the U.S. Open.

Gauff owns a 4-2 head-to-head record against Sabalenka, but the two players split their pair of meetings last season. Gauff's win in New York last fall is the only Grand Slam meeting the two players have had.

Djokovic and Sinner set up a must-see semifinal on the men's side with their victories on Tuesday.

Djokovic took care of Taylor Fritz in four sets to reach the semifinal round in his fifth straight Australian Open appearance.

The top-seeded Serbian has not lost in Melbourne since the fourth round of the 2018 event. He has only one defeat at the last five major tournaments.

Sinner looked like the stronger player on Tuesday, as he cruised past Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

The fourth-seeded Italian has not lost a set yet in Melbourne, and his dominance over Rublev brought up the possibility that he could challenge, or even beat, Djokovic in Friday's semifinals.

Djokovic owns a 4-2 record against Sinner, but the Italian beat him twice in 2023, which could mean Sinner is closer to the top seed's level than anyone else right now.

That remains to be seen, but it is worth noting Djokovic has not been perfect in Melbourne. He has been pushed to a fourth set in three of his five matches.
