Video: Mannarino Laughs While Losing Each Set as Novak Djokovic Ties Federer's Record
French pro Adrian Mannarino suffered a demoralizing straight-sets loss to Novak Djokovic in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open, but he was able to find the humor in his defeat.
Djokovic cruised to a 6-0, 6-0, 6-3 victory in a match that lasted just one hour and 44 minutes. After the first two sets without scoring a single point, Mannarino was seen on camera laughing and gesturing to the crowd at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne:
The victory propelled Djokovic into the Australian Open quarterfinals for the 14th time in his historic career. He has now reached the quarterfinals at a major 58 times, tying Roger Federer's record.
"The first two sets were some of the best sets I've played in a while. I played great from the first to the last point," Djokovic said after the match before jokingly adding, "I really wanted to lose that game in the third set because the tension was building in the stadium."
Only five Grand Slam matches in the Open Era have finished with a triple-bagel score of 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, so Mannarino can take some solace in the fact that he avoided such a dubious honor.
Djokovic, who is looking to extend his record with a 25th Grand Slam title, will face Taylor Fritz in the Australian Open quarterfinals on Tuesday. He is seeking his 11th career Aussie Open title.
