Patrick Mahomes Compares Josh Allen Rivalry to Tom Brady vs. Peyton Manning Matchups

Paul KasabianJan 17, 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills have been rivals for the past four years thanks largely to their respective star quarterbacks in Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen.

It's certainly possible Mahomes vs. Allen will become this generation's preeminent quarterback rivalry akin to the Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady matchups of the 2000s and 2010s. For his part, Mahomes hopes that his showdowns with Allen can follow suit.

"We've played in a lot of big games," Mahomes told reporters in advance of his team's AFC Divisional road matchup at Buffalo on Sunday.

"I'm excited for the challenge. I grew up watching those [Brady-Manning] games and remember how many memories I have from that, and hopefully we can play in these great games as well and give memories to the kids that come up behind us."

Overall, Allen and the Bills have the upper hand against Mahomes and the Chiefs thanks to a 4-3 record, but Kansas City has won both playoff games against Buffalo, including the 2020 AFC Championship Game.

Mahomes and Allen also authored one of the NFL's greatest games in their short rivalry, a 42-36 Chiefs win in the 2021 AFC Divisional round.

That matchup saw the two teams combine for 25 points in the final 1:54 of regulation before the Chiefs won in overtime. Allen and Mahomes combined for 707 passing yards and seven touchdowns.

Since then, the Bills have gotten the better of the Chiefs in a pair of one-score regular-season wins in Kansas City in 2022 and 2023. Oddly enough, the Bills' matchup on Sunday marks only the second time these two teams have played against each other in Buffalo.

Ultimately, the games between these two teams in the Mahomes and Allen eras have never been boring, and there's no reason to think that shouldn't be any different on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
