NFL Rumors: Titans Eye Bengals OC Brian Callahan as HC amid Lions' Aaron Glenn Buzz

Tyler ConwayJan 17, 2024

The Tennessee Titans have reportedly contacted Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan to schedule a second interview for their head coaching vacancy.

Dan Graziano of ESPN reported the Titans have tabbed Callahan for an in-person interview when they're allowed to, beginning next week. Graziano previously reported Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is a "strong candidate" to replace Mike Vrabel.

Callahan has been the Bengals' offensive coordinator since 2019, working under coach Zac Taylor. While Callahan does not call plays—that role belongs to Taylor—he's been an integral part in the Bengals offensive being consistently among the best in football.

Cincinnati surprisingly fared well in the second half of the 2023 season despite Joe Burrow missing the final seven games due to a torn ligament in his right wrist. Backup Jake Browning started in Burrow's place and in some ways outperformed the Bengals franchise quarterback.

The Titans fired Vrabel earlier this month after a six-year tenure. Vrabel went 54-45 and won two division championships during his time in Tennessee, but the Titans are set to embark on a rebuild after consecutive losing seasons.

Callahan's presence as the Bengals rebuilt from rubble themselves might entice Tennessee to give him a shot. The Bengals went 6-25-1 in Callahan's first two seasons under Taylor before the team reeled off three straight winning campaigns, highlighted by a Super Bowl LVI appearance.

Tennessee is hopeful it's found a long-term solution at quarterback in 2023 second-round pick Will Levis and also drafted a promising running back in Tyjae Spears. Longtime quarterback Ryan Tannehill and running back Derrick Henry are expected to leave the Titans this offseason.
