NBA Trade Rumors: Hawks Seeking 2 First-Round Draft Picks for Dejounte Murray

Doric SamJan 15, 2024

The Atlanta Hawks have a coveted trade piece in talented guard Dejounte Murray, but their asking price has hindered other teams from pursuing him.

According to The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor, the Hawks "are asking for two firsts in return for Murray, who would prefer to join a team with a chance to make an immediate playoff run. So far, no one has met their demands."

The Hawks acquired Murray from the San Antonio Spurs prior to the 2022-23 season, but the Spurs have reportedly shown interest in bringing him back. O'Connor noted that San Antonio owns Atlanta's first-round picks in 2025 and 2027 plus the right to swap firsts in 2026 from the deal, and the problem in trying to re-acquire Murray is that "Atlanta's future firsts might be too valuable to give back."

The Hawks and Spurs faced off against one another on Monday afternoon with Atlanta coming out on top 109-99. Murray produced 10 points and 13 rebounds in the victory, which improved the team's record to 16-23 this season.

An All-Star selection in 2022, Murray was expected to pair with Trae Young and form a dangerous backcourt that would help lead the Hawks to success. However, Atlanta has been unable to find consistency with the two of them leading the way, causing many to wonder if it's time for the team to blow things up.

The Spurs are hoping to find a reliable floor general to play alongside 2023 No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama, so perhaps they will do what it takes to meet the Hawks' demands.

If not, Murray will continue to toil away on a middling team in Atlanta that doesn't appear to be a true playoff contender this year.
