Report: Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. George Kambosos Set for Title Fight on May 12
Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. will reportedly square off for the vacant IBF lightweight title in Perth, Australia on May 12, according to ESPN's Mike Coppinger.
Devin Haney, who was previously the undisputed lightweight champion, vacated the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO belts in November ahead of a junior welterweight championship matchup vs. Regis Prograis.
Haney beat Kambosos twice in 2022 and narrowly knocked off Lomachenko in May 2023, a victory that marked the end of his domination of the lightweight division. It wasn't a huge surprise that the 31-0 Haney sought a bigger challenge.

Draymond: Kerr 'Hindered' My Career

Brunson Asked About Roman Reigns
"I did everything at 135 [pounds] that I could," he told reporters in late November. "The biggest fight for me was making that Gervonta Davis fight, and his side showed no interest in making the fight. I've outgrown the division, so now I make my quest to 140 to become a two-division champion."
Kambosos, 30, is 21-2 in his career and last defeated Maxi Hughes in July. He was briefly the undisputed lightweight champion in 2021 before running into Haney, the only man who has bested him.
Lomachenko, 35, is 17-3 in his career, with his last fight his loss against Haney. That came down to a controversial decision and one that Lomachenko's manager, Egas Klimas, called a "robbery."
"We're not going to let this go," he added at the time. "I guarantee we're going to protest. I guarantee we're going to appeal that decision, because somebody needs to end this injustice."
Haney, meanwhile, had nothing but respect for Lomachenko after the fight.
"Lomachenko is a future Hall of Famer," he told reporters. "He was my toughest opponent by far. He is very crafty, and we put on a great fight for the fans. ... He turns it up in the championship rounds. I just have to take my hat off to him."
As for Kambosos and Lomachenko, the pair had originally planned to fight in the summer of 2022, per Coppinger, but Lomachenko chose to stay in his home country of Ukraine after it was invaded by Russia. Now, the fight appears set to finally happen.
