Michigan's J.J. McCarthy Will Announce 2024 NFL Draft Decision on Sunday

J.J. McCarthy intends to make a decision on his future this weekend.

The Wolverines junior quarterback told ESPN's Tom VanHaaren that he will announce whether he is entering the 2024 NFL draft or returning to Michigan for his senior season on Sunday.

McCarthy has been Michigan's starting quarterback in each of the last two seasons and he's coming off an impressive 2023 campaign that saw him lead the Wolverines to an undefeated record and their first-ever College Football Playoff national title.

The 20-year-old completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns against four interceptions in 15 games, in addition to rushing for 202 yards and three scores.

If McCarthy does declare for the 2024 draft, the consensus among evaluators is that he will be a first-round pick, per ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller. One AFC East executive even compared his skillset to that of Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow "because of his mobility, toughness, winning mentality and ability to hit every throw," according to Miller.

However, some have expressed worries about how his game will translate at the next level. "Those who are less sure about his transition to the NFL definitely hang their hat on his lack of star power stats," Miller wrote.

"Tell me the game to watch where you're blown away by his quarterback ability," an AFC South area scout told Miller.

Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department lists McCarthy as the seventh-best quarterback and the No. 99 prospect available in the upcoming draft. The B/R Scouting Department did not include him in its first-round mock draft.

The likes of USC's Caleb Williams, UNC's Drake Maye and LSU's Jayden Daniels are considered the top quarterbacks available this spring. McCarthy is considered to be in a second tier that includes Washington's Michael Penix Jr., Oregon's Bo Nix and Texas' Quinn Ewers.

If McCarthy opts to return to Michigan, he'll get the opportunity to improve his draft stock in hopes of solidifying himself as a true first-rounder.
