Eagles' Jalen Hurts on Injury: 'If It's Shattered, It's Shattered. It Is What It Is'

Paul KasabianDec 16, 2024

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts isn't overly concerned with the broken ring finger on his left hand.

"I can say I don't think it got any worse today," he said after Sunday's 27-13 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. "If it's shattered, it's shattered. It is what it is."

Hurts arrived at Lincoln Financial Field with the finger bandaged up and wore a glove on his left hand for the game.

You wouldn't have guessed he had a broken finger based on his performance. He finished 25-of-32 for 290 yards and two touchdowns.

Hurts has led the Eagles to a great season, with Philadelphia currently 12-2 and in first place in the NFC East. They have already secured a playoff berth and positioned themselves as a legitimate Super Bowl threat in search of a second Lombardi Trophy.

For the season, Hurts has accounted for 32 touchdowns (18 passing, 14 rushing), throwing for 2,892 yards and rushing for 589 more.

The 26-year-old has excelled as the Eagles' starting quarterback over the last three-plus seasons. He's led Philadelphia to the playoffs from 2021-2023, including an NFC title in 2022.

Hurts' value to the team largely goes without saying. After a string of underwhelming showings and rumors of drama between he and star receiver A.J. Brown, Sunday night was a reminder of how dynamic the Eagles offense can be.

Philly will hope Hurts' broken finger doesn't get any worse because there's a wide gulf from him to backup Kenny Pickett.

Across his two years with the Steelers, Pickett averaged 6.3 yards per attempt and has as many touchdowns as interceptions (13). Pivoting to the 2022 first-round pick for a few series or a relatively meaningless regular-season game wouldn't be the worst thing, but the Eagles' title quest would hit a snag if he needed to take over for an extended stretch.
