Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮
Belichick was hired by the Patriots in January 2000 after a bizarre sequence of events that began with a planned press conference to introduce him as head coach of the New York Jets, succeeding Bill Parcells.
Instead, Belichick gave Jets officials a piece of paper that said he was resigning as head coach. He went to the Patriots in a deal that required New England to trade a first-round draft pick to the Jets since he was under contract to New York at the time.
That was also the same year the Patriots drafted an unheralded quarterback from Michigan named Tom Brady in the sixth round. Both of those moves dramatically altered the course of NFL history, leading to the franchise becoming one of the great dynasties in professional sports.
Even though the last few years of Belichick's run in New England were often defined by frustrating moments, particularly with some coaching hirings and personnel moves on the offensive side of the ball, it doesn't take away from what he accomplished before that.
No head coach in NFL history has won more Super Bowl titles than Belichick. He led the Patriots to 17 AFC East titles in 19 seasons from 2001 to '19 and eight consecutive appearances in the AFC title game from 2011 to '18.
