NFL Exec: Bill Belichick Can Have 'Andy Reid-Type Impact' With Next Team as HC

Despite his lack of success in recent years with the New England Patriots, there is still some belief within the NFL that Bill Belichick can turn a new team around as head coach.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, an anonymous AFC personnel official compared Belichick to Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, saying: "He can have an Andy Reid-type impact on a new team, similar to when Reid went from Philadelphia to Kansas City. Assuming he's still got the energy to do it, he's about as good of a coach as you can hire. Knows what it takes to win."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday that Belichick and the Patriots are expected to part ways after 24 years together, making Belichick a coaching free agent for the first time in over two decades.

During his time in New England, the 71-year-old Belichick enjoyed unprecedented success, going 266-121 and winning six Super Bowls and 17 AFC East titles.

When taking into account his time as the Cleveland Browns head coach, Belichick has 302 career regulars-season head coaching wins, putting him just 16 behind Chicago Bears legend George Halas and 26 behind Miami Dolphins legend Don Shula for the all-time NFL record.

When taking playoff wins into account, Belichick has 333 victories, which is second behind Shula's 347.

However, since the departure of quarterback Tom Brady, the Patriots have missed the playoffs in three of the past four seasons, including 2023 when they went just 4-13, which was their worst-ever record under Belichick.

A change of scenery could possibly work wonders, though, just like it did for Reid when he left the Eagles for the Chiefs.

In 14 seasons as head coach of the Eagles, Reid went 130-93-1 with nine playoff appearances, five trips to the NFC Championship Game and one Super Bowl appearance.

The Eagles parted ways with Reid after back-to-back years outside the playoffs, and that turned out to be the best possible thing for the future Hall of Fame coach.

In his 11 seasons in Kansas City, Reid is 128-51, he has made 10 playoff appearances, he has won eight consecutive AFC West titles, and he has won two Super Bowls in three tries.

Reid went from a great coach in Philly to a legendary one in KC, and his place in history is undeniable, as he is now fourth on the NFL's all-time regular-season coaching wins list with 258.

There is no guarantee that Belichick will follow a similar path to Reid since it would require him landing in an ideal situation and likely getting a great quarterback.

Of the teams with head coaching vacancies, the Los Angeles Chargers are the only one known to have a great quarterback in Justin Herbert. The Washington Commanders have the No. 2 overall draft pick, which they could parlay into a top QB, and the Carolina Panthers have Bryce Young, who went first overall in 2023.

With Belichick, there is also the issue of whether his role will extend beyond head coach, as he was also the Pats' general manager.

It will be nearly impossible for Belichick to replicate the success he had in New England or to even come close, but given all he has done in his career, a struggling franchise would be wise to give him a chance and see if he has at least one Super Bowl left in him.
