Lakers News: Former Blazers Guard Skylar Mays Agrees to 2-Way Contract

Andrew PetersJan 8, 2024

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed former Portland Trail Blazer and Atlanta Hawk Skylar Mays to a two-way contract, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Selected late in the second round of the 2020 NBA draft, Mays spent his first two seasons with the Hawks before joining the Trail Blazers last March. Portland waived the shooting guard last week.

The 26-year-old will give the Lakers some backcourt depth with guard Gabe Vincent out for several weeks after undergoing knee surgery. The Lakers have lost four of their last five games and are looking for a midseason spark.

Mays has appeared in 88 games through his four-season career, averaging 4.9 points, 2.0 assists and 1.3 rebounds, playing about 12 minutes per contest. He showed some flashes late in the season last year for the Trail Blazers, averaging 15.6 points, 8.8 assists and 3.4 rebounds in five starts.

Los Angeles is on the cusp of the playoff picture, sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference at 18-19. The Lakers picked up a big win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak, and now they're looking to gain momentum.

Perhaps adding a young talent to come off the bench will give the Lakers some energy heading into the second half of the season.
