NFL Exec Trolls Panthers Owner David Tepper: We Should Predict His Next Interim HC

Jack MurrayJan 8, 2024

David Tepper's short leash with head coaches has caught the attention of others around the NFL.

Tepper purchased the Carolina Panthers in 2018 and has already hired and fired three head coaches in that time. The Panthers as a whole have had five different people assume the head coaching role and that number will likely be six by next season.

While the next head coach will likely be very sought after, Tepper's fickle nature has some around the league already expecting a short leash for whoever is hired.

"We should probably predict who his next interim head coach is going to be," a veteran exec told Mike Sando of The Athletic.

Tepper inherited Ron Rivera when he purchased the team and Rivera only lasted until midway through the 2019 season. Matt Rhule was the first handpicked coach by Tepper and he was out by midway through the 2022 season. The shortest tenure was that of Frank Reich, who was hired ahead of the 2023 season and only lasted 11 games in the role.

Given Carolina's 1-10 start to the season, Reich's firing was sort of understandable. However, the franchise undeniably has an unstable culture and the next hire needs to be the right one. This is especially true in regards to 2023 No. 1 pick Bryce Young, whose development is crucial to the Panthers taking a step in the right direction.
