Cowboys' Jerry Jones on Mike McCarthy's Future: We'll See How Each Playoff Game Goes

Although the Dallas Cowboys secured the NFC East's top spot with a resounding 38-10 win over the Washington Commanders in Week 18, owner Jerry Jones revealed that head coach Mike McCarthy's job security isn't set in stone.

Jones told reporters, per Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, that "we'll see how each game goes" in the playoffs when asked directly about McCarthy's future with the team.

The Cowboys' first test will come against the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.

Although Dallas has made the playoffs in the past two seasons under McCarthy, the team has failed to advance past the divisional round. The Cowboys have still not appeared in an NFC Championship game since their 1995 Super Bowl-winning season, and it appears that Jones' patience is wearing thin.

On Saturday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that McCarthy's future with Dallas will be determined by results in the playoffs.

"If the Cowboys play well in the postseason, McCarthy would have an excellent chance to keep his job," Schefter wrote. "But if they struggle and end the season with an embarrassing loss, as has happened in each of the past two years, then some say that change could come to Dallas."

While the Cowboys have been excellent offensively in the regular season under McCarthy in each of the previous two years, the team's production has typically declined in the playoffs. Dallas failed to surpass the 20-point mark in each of its past two postseason defeats.

Quarterback Dak Prescott and the rest of the Cowboys' offense will look to come out strong against a Packers defense that allowed 20.6 points per game throughout the regular season, the 10th-best mark in the NFL.

Dallas and Green Bay are set to face off on Sunday, with kickoff at 4:30 p.m. ET.
