Colts' Tyler Goodson Reflects on Costly Drop in Texans Loss: 'This Doesn't Define Me'

Indianapolis Colts running back Tyler Goodson isn't dwelling on his costly drop in the team's 23-19 loss to the Houston Texans.

Goodson was unable to corral a pass from Gardner Minshew on 4th-and-1 with 1:06 remaining. He was all but assured of moving the chains if he had made the catch.

"This doesn't define me as a player," he said of the play. "It definitely motivates me. I work too hard to not make that play, and it's going to haunt me for days and days and days until I get back in that position to make that same play."

Goodson didn't fit the profile of a player who would be asked to step up in such a big moment. He had appeared in just five games with 19 combined touches entering Saturday.

Not only having the third-string running back on the field but also drawing up a screen pass for him led some to question head coach Shane Steichen's decision-making.

The Colts ran for 227 yards and averaged 6.1 yards per carry as a team. Putting the ball in the hands of Jonathan Taylor was seemingly the most straightforward solution in a short-yardage situation.

In Steichen's defense, he drew up a play that nearly worked.

"We saw the front they were in, and we liked the look for that play in that situation," he said after the game.

Unfortunately for Colts players, coaches and fans, they'll have all offseason to replay the situation in their minds. Indianapolis' defeat eliminated the team from playoff contention.

Goodson won't want to get in his own head too much, but the drop can turn into a positive if it spurs him even more to turn heads in training camp and attain a bigger role in the backfield for 2024.
