Eagles Rumors: Jalen Hurts Avoids Fracture in Finger After Injury vs. Giants

Timothy RappJan 7, 2024

Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts avoided a major injury to his finger, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Hurts said on Sunday he would be "taking it day by day" after suffering a finger injury during the 27-10 loss to the New York Giants.

Hurts suffered the injury in the first half and was pulled shortly before halftime, as the Giants led 24-0 at that point. Hurts completed seven of 16 passes for 55 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception, adding four rushing yards on two carries.

A Philadelphia loss or a Dallas Cowboys win would mean the Cowboys would win the NFC East (clinching the No. 2 seed) and the Eagles would be the No. 5 seed. Not only did Philadelphia lose, but Dallas also beat the Washington Commanders to secure the division.

As a result, the Eagles will now hit the road to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round. When asked about Hurts' status for the game, head coach Nick Sirianni said, "We'll see."

It's been an interesting year for Hurts. He looked like a potential MVP candidate after leading the team to a 10-1 record that featured several come-from-behind victories, including wins over AFC contenders like the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.

But a shocking three-game losing streak against the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks—the latter a game in which he was questionable to play with an illness before ultimately suiting up—took a lot of the shine off his season.

In total, Hurts has thrown for 3,858 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, also rushing for 605 yards and 15 scores, though he's lost four fumbles.

In 2022, he only accounted for six turnovers. This season, he's on pace to triple that mark

He has battled injuries this season, namely a nagging knee injury. He did not miss any games during the regular season, though injuries have been a narrative throughout his career.

In 2022, a shoulder sprain cost him two games late in the season and appeared to linger throughout the postseason. He also dealt with a left high ankle sprain in the 2021 season and had offseason surgery to address it.

Despite what David Carr might have to say on the matter, the Eagles are in serious trouble if Hurts is forced to miss significant time. His backup, Marcus Mariota, threw for 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 15 games for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022, completing 61.3 percent of his passes while taking 28 sacks.

And those mediocre numbers still represented one of his better seasons as a professional. If Hurts is out for any significant period of time, Philly's season is on the ropes.
