AEW Collision Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction, Highlights From Dec. 16

Doc-Chris MuellerDec 16, 2023

Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage and recap of AEW Collision on December 16.

The Continental Classic continued this week with two more matches from the blue league. The first saw Brody King take on Bryan Danielson, and the second featured Daniel Garcia facing Eddie Kingston.

We also got some tag team action as the high-flying Komander and Penta El Zero Miedo battled Daddy Magic and Cool Hand Ang.

Friday's ROH Final Battle event delivered some great action. Let's take a look at what happened on this week's Collision to see if AEW was able to keep that momentum going.

Andrade El Idolo vs. Claudio Castagnoli

1 of 7

After some pre-show interviews and a couple of videos, the first match got going almost 10 minutes into the show when Claudio Castagnoli and Andrade El Idolo fought in another Continental Classic bout.

These are two of the most versatile performers in AEW but they also have completely different styles. They can both work at a brisk pace and use a variety of moves, so they worked together very well.

As expected, this was a good match and a smart choice to start the show. It got the crowd in the right mood for the rest of the night and added another solid entry into the Continental Classic.

Castagnoli took advantage of the referee being distracted by a removed turnbuckle pad to hit a low blow before finishing off El Idolo with the Gotch Neutralizer.

Result: Claudio Castagnoli defeated Andrade El Idolo

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • El Idolo has put on a lot of mass since he joined AEW. He was never this big in WWE.
  • Castagnoli is so much funnier than people think. The way he casually taunts opponents during matches can often be overlooked because it's so subtle. The way he posed after taking El Idolo down with a clothesline is a good example.
  • Where was CJ Perry? Isn't she supposed to be managing El Idolo?
  • Castagnoli was involved in a wild match 24 hours before this and didn't even look like he was trying to take it easy. This man has no limits.
  • The way El Idolo reversed the Sharpshooter into a Figure Four was cool.
  • The superplex into the Three Amigos was a fun spot.

Abadon vs. Jazmin Allure

After taking a loss at Final Battle, Jazmin Allure was looking to score a win on Collision, but unfortunately for her, Abadon was not going to make it easy.

They went right after Allure and ended up winning in less than two minutes. Julia Hart appeared and put the TBS title down between her and Abadon. The green-haired fighter tackled her and they started brawling.

Skye Blue showed up and stared at Abadon before taking her down. Thunder Rosa got up from the Spanish announce table and made the save. She and Abadon shook hands to a big pop from the crowd.

Result: Abadon defeated Jazmin Allure

Grade: Incomplete

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Abadon no-selling Allure's kicks was a cool moment.
  • Nigel McGuinness is usually great on commentary, but the Skye Black line was not his best.

Orange Cassidy vs. Bryan Keith (International Championship)

Collision.

After impressing with his performances at Final Battle in two different matches, "Bounty Hunter" Bryan Keith got a shot at the International Championship.

Keith has been getting rave reviews wherever he appears recently, and this match is going to be no different. The fans were hyped to see him and he played to the crowd perfectly, which is not easy when facing someone as popular as OC.

Despite having competed in two physical matches on Friday night, Keith looked energized and ready to make the most of this opportunity. He was never going to leave with the title, but having a great showing against one of AEW's most popular stars is still valuable.

Cassidy came close to losing a few times but was able to pull off the win with a pinning combination. OC intended his hand as a show of respect but Keith showed him respect by tipping his hat instead.

Result: Orange Cassidy defeated Bryan Keith

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Cassidy's pre-show interview was hilarious.
  • It was nice to hear the crowd chanting BK for Keith.
  • Keith faking out Cassidy with a punch so he could try to hit his finisher was a funny moment.
  • The jumping headbutt from Keith was awesome.

Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander vs. Diamante and Mercedes Martinez

Collision.

A Texas Street Fight took place this week when Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander teamed up to take on Diamante and Mercedes Martinez.

Kris and Willow wore matching gear to reference Pulp Fiction while Martinez and Diamante wore matching gear.

This was chaotic from the opening moment. Within the first minute, Willow was hit in the head with a bottle and busted open. More weapons were brought into the ring almost immediately. It didn't take long for Diamante to be busted open, too.

This match was all over the place in the way you would expect from an AEW Street Fight. Whether that is a good or bad thing is up to your personal tastes. If you like this kind of mayhem, then you probably had a great time watching these four women beat the life out of each other.

All four competitors did a great job keeping the match moving and using all of the various props to make this feel like a violent encounter. This wasn't as bloody as some previous Street Fights, and that may have been for the best.

After Willow ended up going through a table, Stat was able to finish the match for their team by hitting Diamante with a chain-assisted clothesline.

Result: Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander defeated Mercedes Martinez and Diamante

Grade: B

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Willow sold the bottle to the head perfectly.
  • It was hard to tell, but Diamante might have been busted open the hard way.
  • The landing Stat took on the chairs when Martinez suplexed her from the top rope was nasty.
  • The glass and tack spots are the hardest to watch in a match like this.

Brian Cage Squash Match, Eddie Kingston vs. Daniel Garcia

Brian Cage defeated a local talent in about a minute with the greatest of ease.

Result: Brian Cage defeated some poor soul

Grade: Incomplete

The next Continental Classic match on this show was between Kingston and Garcia, both of whom scored wins at Final Battle on Friday. If The Mad King lost here, he would be mathematically eliminated from the tournament and lose his ROH and NJPW openweight titles.

For Garcia, this was a chance to score his first points after coming up short against Danielson, Castagnoli and El Idolo in his first three matches. He has no chance of winning the tourney, but he could play spoiler for Kingston.

Even though Garcia is a much more technically sound competitor, he and Kingston have a lot more in common than it may appear on the surface. Both of them enjoy hurting their opponents, both of them are New York tough guys, and both of them can beat you with a strike of a submission at any time.

This was as physical as you would expect a match from these two to be, but the surprising part was how much offense Garcia had. They did a great job making it feel like he might actually win and eliminate Kingston from the tournament.

This match was exactly what it needed to be and ended perfectly with Kingston hitting a huge backfist to score the pin.

Result: Eddie Kingston defeated Daniel Garcia

Grade: A-

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Cage using his opponent to do bicep curls is always funny.
  • Daddy Magic should be on commentary more often.
  • Tony Schiavone announced that Rosa and Abadon would take on Blue and Hart next week in Rosa's first match back in many months.
  • Garcia smiling and dancing after having just been beaten down in the corner was a badass moment.

Bryan Danielson vs. Brody King

Collision.

The main event of the night was another C2 match between King and Danielson. Both men came into this with six points and a loss, so this was an important round for both men.

The American Dragon did his best to stay out of King's grasp by sticking and moving with strikes while trying to protect his injured eye.

The powerhouse of HOB eventually got his hands on Danielson and made sure to focus some of his offense on his eye. This quickly turned into a David vs. Goliath-type battle, which is exactly what it should be.

This was a hard-hitting affair that made both men look good. King has been excelling during this tournament and added yet another great performance to the list with this one.

It took four running knees from Danielson to finally put down King for the pin, and he still almost kicked out right after the three-count.

Result: Bryan Danielson defeated Brody King

Grade: B+

Notable Moments and Observations

  • Nobody is talking about how Vikingo and Danielson have the same hairstyle.
  • Danielson was doing a good job selling his eye injury.
  • The running crossbody King hit while Danielson was sitting in a chair was a great spot. The impact looked brutal.
  • The way Danielson countered King into a single-leg crab looked really good.

The Final Word

Collision.
Collision.

This week's Collision gave us a handful of fun matches, but there wasn't much in the way of storyline progression other than a couple of segments.

The growing feud between FTR and The House of Black took an interesting turn this week, the return of Thunder Rosa is going to inject some energy into the women's division, and the C2 tournament is nearing its end as we get close to Worlds End.

Having Skye Blue change her mind to join Julia Hart is something that will need an explanation, but if done right, she could be an interesting addition to HOB.

Kingston vs. Garcia and King vs. Danielson were the two biggest highlights from the show, but the women's Street Fight is also worth taking the time to watch if you didn't see the show live.
