3 Takeaways from 49ers' Week 14 Win vs. Seahawks

Joe TanseyDec 11, 2023

The San Francisco 49ers completed their season sweep over the Seattle Seahawks in commanding fashion on Sunday.

The 49ers asserted their dominance right away with a 72-yard run from Christian McCaffrey on the first play from scrimmage.

Jordan Mason pounded in a three-yard touchdown on the next play and the 49ers never looked back.

The performance was exactly what we have come to expect from the 49ers, who have not lost since Week 8.

Sunday's win combined with the Dallas Cowboys' triumph over the Philadelphia Eagles put the 49ers in first place in the NFC, a position they may not give up for the rest of the regular season.

Christian McCaffrey's 72-Yard Run Set Tone For Victory

The 49ers wasted no time to show off their dominance inside Levi's Stadium.

McCaffrey broke loose for a 72-yard run through the middle of the Seattle defense to kill any hopes of the Seahawks pulling off the upset.

McCaffrey did not score the touchdown on the play after because he was exhausted from the long run, but that did not matter because he already played an important role in the contest.

Seattle needed to put together a good first defensive series to provide some confidence on its sideline to an offense led by Drew Lock.

Seattle's offense countered with a touchdown of its own, but its defense did not hold up against the big plays.

All three of San Francisco's top wide receivers had a catch of 40 or more yards, including long touchdown catches from George Kittle and Deebo Samuel.

McCaffrey's long scamper in the first minute showed the 49ers that the Seahawks were susceptible to big plays and they took full advantage of that throughout the victory.

Brock Purdy Continued To Show Full Control Of Offense

Confidence should grow within the 49ers organization each week that Purdy is the quarterback who can lead them to a Super Bowl.

Purdy once again showcased his full command of the offense, as he threw for 368 yards and two touchdowns.

Purdy's passing numbers may seem inflated to some because Kittle, Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk did a ton of work after the catch.

But Purdy still delivered the ball to all of them for their respective 40-yard plays and that has to count for something.

Purdy is now second in the NFL in passing yards with 3,553, and if he continues to thrive down the stretch, he might make the strong case for the Most Valuable Player award.

49ers Defense Shut Down Seattle After 1st Quarter

The 49ers conceded just six points in the final three quarters.

The defense settled into the contest and forced Lock to come back to reality.

Seattle's backup quarterback turned in an impressive first quarter that was highlighted by a touchdown pass to DK Metcalf.

Metcalf's touchdown on Seattle's opening series was the only trip to the end zone in the first half.

The Seahawks turned another first-quarter drive into a field goal, but then the 49ers forced four punts and let one series be cut short by halftime.

The defensive shutdown allowed the offense to pull away, and by the time Seattle scored its second touchdown, it felt more like a consolation prize than anything else.
