College Football Week 13 Odds: Predicting Top Bets Against the Spread

Joe TanseyNov 28, 2023

A few significant quarterback injuries are unfortunately looming over college football's championship week.

The SMU Mustangs will be without starting quarterback Preston Stone, who was declared out for the season on Monday with a serious leg injury.

Stone's absence puts the Tulane Green Wave in a tremendous spot to win the American Athletic Conference Championship Game and likely secure the Group of Five berth in the New Years' Six.

SMU could not have asked for a worse time for a quarterback injury to happen, as it now needs to try and find similar offensive success with a backup signal-caller.

The ACC Championship Game will mark the second game in which the Florida State Seminoles use Tate Rodemarker as their starter in place of the injured Jordan Travis.

FSU does not need Rodemaker to be as explosive as Travis, it just needs a serviceable performance against the Louisville Cardinals to support its strong defense.

No. 25 SMU at No. 17 Tulane (-5.5)

Tulane must be considered one of the top favorites to win in Week 14.

The Green Wave already had a strong chance of winning the AAC Championship Game because they are playing at home and are coming off some of their best defensive performances of the season.

Willie Fritz's side is at an even bigger advantage now that Stone is unable to start for SMU.

Stone produced 3,197 passing yards and 28 touchdowns for a SMU offense that eclipsed the 30-point mark in all 10 of its victories.

Stone's injury occurred late in Week 13's win over the Navy Midshipmen, so backup Kevin Jennings did not get much game time to work with the offense.

Jennings could be swallowed up by the Green Wave defense, who will try to make every throw uncomfortable for him

Tulane's defense is coming off one of its best outings of the season, as it limited the UTSA Roadrunners to 16 points in Week 13.

The Green Wave conceded 24 points in the last two weeks and held three of their last four opponents to 16 points or fewer.

Tulane's defense might have been the difference-maker anyway with Stone on the field, but with him absent for SMU, that unit could play an even larger role on Saturday.

Florida State managed its way through its first game without Travis.

The Seminoles eked out a 17-15 road win over the Florida Gators in which Rodemaker threw for 134 yards and received 90 yards of support from the ground attack.

FSU's defense stepped up in that contest to hold Florida to 232 total yards. A similar performance is needed to slow down Louisville and win the ACC.

Louisville proved in its Week 13 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats that it has a vulnerable defense, which is a great sign for Rodemaker and Co.

Saturday will mark Rodemaker's second start, but he also received significant playing time against North Alabama in the game Travis got hurt in. At least he has found some comfortability within the offense.

FSU needs running back Trey Benson, who had 95 yards against Florida, to play well in support of Rodemaker so that the backup quarterback does not have to do everything to beat Louisville.

The Cardinals gave up at least 24 points in each of their last three games. They allowed 31 points to the Miami Hurricanes two weeks ago and conceded 38 to Kentucky last week.

FSU's defense has not allowed more than 20 points since its road win over the Clemson Tigers on September 23.

Rodemaker still has to make a few key plays, but if his defense supports him like it did against Florida, the Seminoles can move to 13-0 and cover the small point spread.
