ATP Finals 2023: Novak Djokovic vs. Jannik Sinner Preview, Top Storylines

Nicholas NathansonNov 19, 2023

At 12:00 p.m. EST today, Novak Djokovic will take on Jannik Sinner from Turin, Italy, in the ATP Finals in a match that is sure to excite.

Djokovic is currently tied with Roger Federer with six ATP Finals titles and is seeking his record-breaking seventh.

The 36-year-old, who is just days removed from having his incredible 19-match win streak snapped, has had another impeccable year, compiling a record of 54-6 with a 6-1 record in his seven ATP Finals matchesโ€”his sole loss coming to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets at the Wimbledon Final.

The Serbian is coming off his best match in Turin, where he took down world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 in under 90 minutes, making it look routine with few errors and strong play at the net.

Djokovic will look to continue with that momentum against an opponent that just ended his 19-match win streak, playing with no fear.

His opponent, Jannik Sinner, has never played better tennis in his young career.

The 22-year-old Italian has won 17 of his last 18 matches, including two against previous opponents he had never beaten, Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune.

On the indoor hard-court surface, Sinner is one of the hardest players to defeat due to his aggression and power off the bounce, rally discipline, and overall consistency.

With a win, Sinner would become the first player under 23 years old to win an ATP Finals title without dropping a match since Roger Federer did so in 2003.

Additionally, he would become the first Italian to win the ATP Finals.

Playing in the biggest match of his young career in front of his home fans, Sinner has shown time and time again, especially this week, that no moment is too big for himโ€”even if it's against the greatest player of all time.

But what happens if he cramps up if it goes three sets? Or he gets nervous?

Even if these things do happen, considering that Sinner is playing with all the momentum, is in the form of his life, and is paired with a crowd that has fueled him, this is his moment to win and possibly foreshadow what's to come in 2024.
